that rockets have been fired at jerusalem. this new escalation, that's according to the newspaper in israel, but this new escalation comes after a failed cease-fire between the israelis and the palestinians earlier today. israel had said that it held off the bombing for two hours because egypt's prime minister was inside gaza meeting with hamas leaders and the palestinians for their part are denying that. they're disputing it. this week's fighting we know this has left more than 200 people injured. three israeli soldiers are dead, there are reports of civilian israelis dead as well and 24 palestinians killed in gaza and israel is amassing tanks near the border with gaza and called up 16,000 army reservists. let's get you straight to cnn fred plaiken live in jerusalem at this hour. this is extraordinary. what do we know? where did the rockets land near jerusalem and what is being said about this? >> ashleigh, you're right. it is extraordinary and very much out of the ordinary many in jerusalem. the air raid sirens went off a little less than an hour ago. we could hear them. you heard a thud

're going to get to between israel and gaza. hamas aims rockets at jerusalem and they miss. but the fact hamas is going after what israel considers its capital city shows how much pressure is building in the middle east right now. i want you to listen to this. so an i reporter captured air raid sirens going off in jerusalem. hamas, the group that controls gaza, landed south of jerusalem. more rockets aimed for tel aviv ende in the water. no reports of damagen either case, though. but officials say 27 palestinians have died since weesday from israel's strike in gaza. this is israeli defense forces video showi what they say, look at this, they say this is munition sites. israel points to the stockpiles as more proof hamas is trying escalate tension. hamas says israel is to blame. people live in fear of how close the attacks will come. listen to one man in gaza just last night. >> i fear my life is at risk by merely being out the streets. i literally felt i could lose my life at any moment. target i targeting israeli civilians, i might as well -- >> he was able to reconnect with us moments

to that cease-fire over the border that president morsi actually helped broker between israel and hamas. palestinian leaders say israel has already violated the truce. its soldiers open fire today on a group of palestinians in a buffer zone near the gaza-israeli border. sarah seidner joining us from jerusalem. sarah, no one disputes that israelis soldiers opened fire, but israel and hamas have very different views about the eths that led up to that shooting. what is each side saying? >> well, the department of health there, the ministry in gaza, is saying that these were farmers, they were out, and ended up being fired upon, but the israeli military says that these were several groups of men coming up protesting, coming up to the border fence, trying to go over to the israeli side of the border. that the soldiers fired warning shots in the air initially. when those warnings were not heeded, they ened up shooting towards their legs. the government in gaza is saying that they had killed one person and that the israeli soldiers injured 25 people. the israeli military right now not confirmi

in negotiating the israel/hamas cease-fire. today, protesters set fire to a symbol of morsi's power, the muslim brotherhood headquarters in alexandria, egypt. morsi supporters clashed with protesters there. morsi is defending his new powers, saying he's not taking sides and the steps he took are meant to achieve political and social stability. reza sayah joins us live in cairo. reza, is morsi's government strong enough, so early in this administration, to withstand this level of protests? >> reporter: well, we're going to find out in the coming weeks, but the political landscape is certainly in his favor. he's got the backing of police and security forces, but make no mistake, these are demonstrators, protesters that are determined and energized. many say one of the outcomes of the 2011 revolution was that many egyptians lost their fear and inhibition to protests and speak up. in other words, from now on, if they don't like something, they're not going to be afraid to speak up and say it and that's what we're seeing today, thousands of angry demonstrators filing into tahrir square and other egy
